The Lake Accotink Park trail loop is a moderately challenging hike with several places to stop and let restless kids out so they can run around. There are plenty of scenic opportunities, and the fact that it’s a loop means you’ll end up back at the car when you’re done! The trail is fairly well used by pedestrians, but does not share the trail with heavy bike traffic, making it an ideal family hike.
Trail surface: Mix of paved, dirt, and gravel
Freedom Coded: Mostly yellow, although you are sometimes walking along neighborhood streets and there are sometimes curves or bends that obstruct sight lines.
Double stroller accessible: Yes-ish. Some of the hills might be steep for a double stroller depending on how much your kids weigh. It might be a good idea to try this one with a partner the first time.
Stroller type: Jogger or pack.
Distance: nearly five miles
Loop: yes.
Shade cover: Mixed.
Restrooms: in the Visitor Center or at the playground near the carousel. (Open hours may vary by season.)
Parking: ample, in the visitor center lot or near the carousel. You will want to access the trail by exiting the parking lot and turning left on the street, not by going down the extremely long flight of steps from the nature center.
Getting There: Lake Accotink Park Visitor Center, 7500 Accotink Park Rd, Springfield
Stop in the visitor center for a trail map and directions. Be advised, there is one typo on the directions, which say “Loisdale” drive when they mean “Lonsdale.”
