The weather is beautiful for Old Town Alexandria today. There are so many festivities you couldn’t throw a pinecone without hitting one. Head down for carolers, pictures with Santa, kilts, bagpipes, and whatever else your heart desires. It’s beautiful. If you just get out of the car and follow signs or wait for someone to offer you a flier, you’ll find yourself with something wonderful to do. There are grownup things and family things, so if you are lucky enough to be kid-free this afternoon, go for it!

Review: Drumming with Dishes

The reason for our first trip to the Workhouse Arts Center was Drumming with Dishes, Holiday Edition (Show runs through Dec 8). After you arrive and either check in (advance purchases) or buy your ticket at the door, you head down the hallway and have a choice of either a quiet reading area or a hands-on play area to amuse your kiddo while you wait for the show to start- or you can stop on your way out. Either way, this is what we call a sign that Arts on the Horizon understands how kids work, so they’ve already made my A list.

Alexandria Scottish Christmas Walk

Each year since 1969, the holiday season steps off to a brisk pace with the Alexandria Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend. The Society originally partnered with the Alexandria Y and now co-hosts the event with the Campagna Center of Alexandria, Virginia. The weekend raises funds for needed social services in the City of Alexandria. Each year the weekend kicks off with the annual Taste of Scotland on the Friday before the event and the Walk itself on the first Saturday of every December.

Newest phase of Lee District Playground opens Saturday, 11-16-13

The public is invited to join in the fun as the latest phase of Chessie’s BIG Backyard playground opens on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 10 a.m. Come out for the official ribbon cutting ceremony at the Lee District Family Recreation Area in Lee District Park. The playground is located adjacent to Our Special Harbor spray ground at 6601 Telegraph Road in Franconia, Va. Free hot chocolate and giveaways will be available while supplies last.

Soldier Led Walking Tours of Ft Ward

In honor of Veteran’s Day, join staff member Kevin Moriarty as he portrays a Civil War veteran returning to Fort Ward and reminiscing about his experience serving in the Defenses of Washington. Tour highlights include the history of Fort Ward, soldier life in the Washington area, the furnished Officers’ Hut, and the fort’s Ceremonial Entrance Gate and restored bastion. Program is weather dependent. Tours are approximately 90 minutes each.
